Club Profiles
By Tasneem Syeda

With an expanding population
replete with diversity, different clubs identifying with
student life have sprung up at the NHU in recent years.
Barring the SGA, the existing clubs on campus deal with
interests specific to the members of the clubs. The
following is a sketch of the different clubs on campus and
an insight into what they are all about. If you are
interested in joining any of them, the following shall show
you what you need to know about them and the contact
personnel.
NHU-BSO
A
class project gave birth to the NHU-BSO (Business Student
Organization) in the spring of 2002. It was established to
spread the sense of familiarity and belonging to students
beyond the classrooms and to recognize he contributions that
can be made by students to the campus.
The
BSO have recently been participating and establishing
various ongoing events such as the hugely popular and
convenient book buy back/sell program, the sale of NHU logo
items at the 19th graduation ceremony in the June
of 2004, sponsored a lecture session, a dance party on NHU
grounds and the first ever welcome back to school party.
The
organization was to complement the business department at
NHU, but welcomes students from all backgrounds and fields
of study. For more information about BSO, please contact
club President Wilbert Lleses at 273-2688/

at 273-2772 or at

LULAC
In the
1920’s LULAC- The League of United Latin American Citizens
was established in Texas to recognize the issues and
concerns around the Latino communities of second-generation
immigrants. Ever since, LULAC has played a crucial role in
identifying and resolving many of the social dilemmas that
exist in the different spheres across the nation. Keying in
on the concerns of present day social circumstances, NHU’s
LULAC chapter has some major accomplishments under its belt.
It has been awarded the gold award for the food can drive it
conducted in December, has successfully organized a blood
drive at the university, let the barrels of coffee flow onto
the campus to raise some funds, and are actively involved
with the state and national chapters.
President: Cindy Pelayo, Vice President: Ruben Beltran,
Treasurer: Arnulfo Sanchez, Secretary: Alejandra Valencia,
Public Relations Officer: Karina Avalos

Symposium
Established in the spring of 2003, the philosophy club was a
chance to facilitate discussions and interests of students
in the area of philosophy. Like Plato’s Symposium, this club
believes in enriching student life experience by inviting
peers and guests to participate in discussions and exchange
of ideas. Symposium is also an active participant in various
events such as the Ethics Bowl Competition held annually.
Debates on matters of ethics and real life scenarios
complement the alternate Friday club meetings.
You
can procure more information about the club, their next
meeting date or their activities by contacting club advisor
Michael Jordan at 273-2703,

SGA
With a
growing student body, 1996 saw the institution of the SGA:
the student government association. “The impetus for SGA is
having a strong student voice on campus and student
governance. SGA is really an integral part of the university
and student life,” explains Prof. Adriana Ayala, who is the
faculty advisor for the club.
Media Unit
The
Media Unit presents amplified voices of NHU students through
the student-run online magazine- Abriendo Fronteras. “Though
small, the NHU campus has been a hotbed of ideas, thoughts,
creativity and social awareness and a need for a public
forum has always been felt by students…” is what stands as
the motto for the media unit.
Given the constant change of the population
of the university, the surrounding community, and the
construction at NHU, the timing couldn’t be more appropriate
to listen, watch and analyze and there is where the Media
Unit comes in. The Media Unit is also involved with
projects around campus that involve documenting events on
campus, such as photography, filmmaking, film editing etc.
It also tries it’s best to capture through lens the changes
and the forecasts around NHU.

16 of the quad, or by sending an e-mail at
