For more than 25 years, Dr. Chavez has worked as both an administrator and faculty member in higher education in California and New Mexico. She has served as interim provost, dean of graduate studies and research, executive director of education, director of grants and contracts, department chair of education, program coordinator of special education, and primary investigator for numerous grant programs. Dr. Chavez has developed teacher programs and instructed more than 50 different certificate, master's, and doctoral courses in special education and other fields. She has received numerous awards for her exemplary programs and contributions to the field. Her work has helped to acquire more than $30 million in grants and contracts that provide opportunities for underrepresented students to further their education and for Hispanic-serving institutions to better serve these students.
