My name is Abigail Avila and I'm a graduate from The National Hispanic University. I moved from small town called Livingston to San Jose for college right after high school in 2005. I was scared and very broke; only having sixty-five dollars with me and not to mention I've never had a real job before. Coming from a large family, I didn't want to burden my parents for financial help; I was resolved to make it on my own. My older brother lent me the first month's rent for my housing.
Even though I was accepted at San Jose State, I chose to attend NHU. The small size school and personal attention from instructors appealed to me, I thought it was the perfect fit for me. With the help of Cal grant I registered for classes and found a job opening at the school. A couple of weeks later I got my first job as an Admission Clerk in the student's services department. After two years I thought I would transfer to San Jose State.
Two years later, I was able to transfer like I planned. However, my advisor, Marco Cruz convinced me to stay at NHU and continue the Bachelors program in Liberal Arts. I can't thank him enough for convincing me to make the best decision of my college career. After three years of working as an Admissions Clerk, a better opportunity came along and got a job at an elementary school as a P.E. Instructional Assistant.
Things were looking up for me, and time flew quickly. I took up a second job as a server and continue with that today. For the next year and a half, I would work two jobs and go to school full time. I was determined to finish my degree within 5 years. I did accomplish my goal and finished, earning my bachelors in December of 2009. Currently, I still work two jobs and am enrolled at NHU's teacher credential program.
I want to thank my family and friends, especially my parents, for supporting me all throughout my journey. A big and special thank you to my boyfriend, Ricardo, who is my rock and confidant. He has been there to help me overcome many obstacles and decide on crucial decisions. I wouldn't have gotten this far if it wasn't for all the support I received from everyone.
Thank you!
