Program The National Hispanic University’s Upward Bound Pre-College program is designed to assure low-income, first generation students equal access to institutions of higher learning. It is designed to assist high school students who will be the first generation in their families to go to college. Participants receive instruction in literature, composition, social studies, mathematics, and science, on college campuses after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer. The central idea behind Upward Bound is that students from traditionally underrepresented groups can be prepared successfully to compete in post secondary institutions by providing them with a simulated college experience rich in academic and motivational support. During the summer portion of the program students are immersed in a college environment where they take classes and four weeks out of the six-week program, students live in the dormitories along side the RGAs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ College Education years or currently enrolled
- Able to work with high school students who come from a low-socioeconomic background
- Knowledgeable in the subjects of math and English
- Experience working with diverse population of students
- Responsible and mature, able to think quickly with the ability to solve problems
- Transportation-Must have a car
- Live with students for four weeks on college campus
- Open minded and creative- Must demonstrate creativeness by developing various group activities and icebreakers
- Must attend all social and cultural activities/field trips
SUMMER 2009 PROGRAM:
- Program starts June 29th to August 7th and will be slip into a two week commute experience followed by a four week residential experience.
- The first two weeks of program will be at The National Hispanic University. Students will be commuting to the University throughout these two weeks. RGA’s will also need to commute (No Housing will be provided).
- The last four residential weeks of the program takes place at UC-Santa Cruz. Students as well as RGA’s will be housed in the Dormitories from Sunday thru Friday afternoons.
Job duties and responsibilities:
Resident Guidance Advisors play a crucial role during the summer program. Their responsibilities pertain to both the academic and social aspects of the summer live-in experience. While no list of responsibilities can capture the exact essence of the position (which is sure to require imagination and flexibility), duties include the following;
- Be on call 24 hours per day for the duration of the last 4 weeks of the program.
- Closely monitor and advise 13to 15 assigned students. Tutor students in academic courses where appropriate.
- Assess students' academic, emotional and social needs. Review participant files of assigned students as needed.
- Attend daily staff update meetings and other meetings called by the College Advisor or Administrative Staff.
- Submit summary evaluations of assigned students at the conclusion of the summer program.
- Participate in all evening social, cultural, and counseling activities.
- Supervise and assist in small-group study sessions under the direction of the Upward Bound Program College Advisor. Maintain conductive study atmosphere.
- Report to College Advisor regarding problems, functions and disciplinary measures during program activities and field trips.
- Advise/coach students on a daily basis regarding academic progress, daily class assignments/activities and emotional/physical well-being.
- Supervise students in the dormitory (as assigned) to ensure their safety and well-being. Monitor the entire residential area.
- Assist College Advisor with planning, organizing, and conducting social, cultural, and athletic events.
- Request/attend student conferences for academic or behavioral difficulties.
- Maintain sufficient communication with program staff and students to ensure efficient program operation. Report any problems relating to staff or students to the College Advisor or Administrative Staff.
- In the residential hall, staff should report immediately to the College Advisor in the event of serious student misbehavior or any extreme situation.
- With assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, identify students not in attendance at meals or classes and advice appropriately.
- With assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, ensure that all students are in their rooms and remain there after "lights out".
- With the assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, monitor dormitory during students' recreational period and free times.
- Supervise all needed clean-ups and ensure that dorm facilities are not damaged or misused.
- Attend all Program functions and staff meetings.
- Maintain necessary discipline and harmonious relations among students and staff throughout the program.
