JOB TITLE: PEER ADVISOR for LEARNING/PALS TUTOR

STATUS: PART TIME, $8-$12.00 per hour

 

SCOPE and FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the Director, provide tutoring for high school students participating in the Pre-college programs; assist student in developing study techniques.

 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist program staff with pre and post assessments of student skills.
  2. Provide group and individual tutorial sessions.
  3. Advise students on improved study methods; explain concepts, pricincples, and terminology to students.
  4. Monitor individual progress of students and discuss problems and improvement with program staff; submit student evaluations as required.
  5. Serve as a liaison between students, instructors, parents and project staff.
  6. Assist project staff in the planning and implementation of educational, recreational, guidance, and cultural activities.
  7. Ensure the safety and well being of participants at and during program activities; supervise all participants in general and assigned groups as required.
  8. Perform photocopying and duplication duties as necessary.
  9. Develop and maintain records, logs, and files.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  1. Principles, methods, and procedures of providing tutoring and learning opportunities to students.
  2. Challenges faced by first generation college students.
  3. Oral and written communication skills.
  4. Recordkeeping techniques.
  5. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Abilities:

  1. Organize work and set priorities.
  2. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  3. Flexibility in schedule.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Must be an enrolled college student in good academic standing.
  2. Must have a solid academic background in Math, Science, and/or English.
  3. Minimum one year’s experience working with underrepresented students.
  4. Bilingual abilities in Spanish preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. Position dependent upon continuation of grant funds.
