POSITION: Residential Guidance Advisor (RGA)

OFFICE: Upward Bound

STATUS: Part-Time Temporary

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience

REPORTS TO: College Advisor

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Resident Guidance Advisors play a crucial role during the summer program. Their responsibilities pertain to both the academic and social aspects of the summer live-in experience.

  1. Be on call 24 hours per day (on a rotating basis) for the duration of the six-week program.
  2. Closely monitor and counsel 8 to 10 assigned students.
  3. Tutor students in academic courses where appropriate.
  4. Assess students' academic, emotional, and social needs. Review participant files of assigned students as needed.
  5. Attend daily staff update meetings and other meetings called by the College Advisor or Administrative Staff.
  6. Submit summary evaluations of assigned students at the conclusion of the summer program.
  7. Participate in evening social, cultural, and counseling activities.
  8. Supervise and assist in small-group study sessions under the direction of the Upward Bound Program College Advisor. Maintain conductive study atmosphere.
  9. Report to College Advisor regarding problems, functions and disciplinary measures during program activities and field trips.
  10. Counsel on a daily basis regarding academic progress, daily class assignments/activities, and emotional/physical well-being.
  11. Supervise students in the dormitory (as assigned) to ensure their safety and well-being. Monitor the entire residential area.
  12. Assist College Advisor with planning, organizing, and conducting social, cultural, and athletic events.
  13. Request/attend student conferences for academic or behavioral difficulties.
  14. Maintain sufficient communication with program staff and students to ensure efficient program operation. Report any problems relating to staff or students to the College Advisor or Administrative Staff.
  15. In the residential hall, staff should report immediately to the College Advisor in the event of serious student misbehavior or any extreme situation.
  16. With assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, identify students not in attendance at meals or classes and counsel appropriately.
  17. With assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, ensure that all students are in their rooms and remain there after "lights out.”
  18. With the assistance of Resident Guidance Advisors, monitor dormitory during students' recreational period and free times.
  19. Supervise all needed clean-ups and ensure that dorm facilities are not damaged or misused.
  20. Attend all Program functions and staff meetings.
  21. Maintain necessary discipline and harmonious relations amongst students and staff throughout the program

Job Requirements:

  1. High School graduate and enrolled in a college program
  2. Able to work with high school students
  3. High academic level
  4. Experience working with diverse population of students
  5. Problem solving abilities required
  6. Previous work with high school students highly preferred
