ELENA PONIATOWSKA
Elena Poniatowska is one of Mexico's most famous authors and public intellectuals. Described in turn as a journalist, novelist and essayist,
she is known for bringing attention to political oppression and social justice issues through her literature. Among her many works is La Noche de Tlatelolco, a documentation of the 1968 confrontation between government armed forces and student activists. She was nominated this year for the prestigious
Neustadt International Prize for Literature (2012), which recognizes a writer's entire body of work. Her latest novel, Leonora, was published in Spanish this year.
