Diabetes is a serious disease that disproportionately affects Latinos. Currently 2.5 million, or 9.5%, of the Latino population in the United States has diabetes. This statistic is important because Latinos are the largest ethnic minority in this country. They are also the youngest and fastest growing population in the nation. As this population increases in numbers, it is reasonable to anticipate that the prevalence among Latinos will also increase with disastrous consequences for Latino families. Therefore, its critically important to educate the community about the seriousness of this disease, proper management and its risk factors, and to provide culturally appropriate materials to assist individuals impacted by this incurable illness. |
