National Hispanic University Student Attends Fifth Annual Clinton Global Initiative University
Gabriel Hernández is one of six students selected to represent Laureate International Universities

San José, Calif.—April 6, 2012—Gabriel Hernández, a National Hispanic University Associate of Science in Mathematics and Science student from San José, Calif., participated in the fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting March 30 to April 1 at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was one of six students representing institutions in the Laureate International Universities network who were selected to attend based on their leadership skills, commitment to social change and academic track record.

Hernández, along with the other LIU participants, completed a CGI U Commitment to Action pledge to contribute to the greater good. His commitment was to recruit and help local bilingual citizens become bilingual nurses to improve healthcare for Latinos in the United States. “Many Latino patients who are sick do not go to doctors to receive medical treatment because they are unable to communicate with them about their health issues.

Those who do go have to rely on a translator, which may be a family member who cannot translate accurately,” he said.

“My experience at the Clinton Global Initiative University has motivated me to complete my commitment and also to take on more challenges. Being around other students who are just as motivated as I am has reassured me that others are working hard as well,” Hernández said. “What I took away from my experience at CGI U is that I can make a difference in my community, and it is my job as a leader to do so.”

More than 1,000 students participated in this year’s CGI U, which is organized annually to educate and motivate young people to make a positive impact in the world. The event offered panel discussions and skill-building sessions on the meeting’s focus areas of education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health. The attendees also took part in a community service project held in conjunction with Rebuilding Together and the United Service Organizations (USO) to refurbish homes for low-income families in Washington, D.C.
