U.S. Department of Energy To Establish Cooperative Agreement With NHU

On July 20, 2005, Theresa Alvillar-Speake, Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), visited NHU to explore the possibilities of a Cooperative Agreement between her office and NHU.

The goal of the proposed cooperative agreement is to increase the number of underrepresented students earning degrees in technical fields, which in turn would build this country's technical workforce.  As a result of the agreement, DOE would provide scholarships for qualified students interested in pursuing degrees at NHU in Computer Science, Mathematics, Science or Engineering.  The DOE would also provide funding to support the development of a Science Bowl team at the Latino College Preparatory Academy and other East San Jose high schools.  The Science Bowl is a national high school competition sponsored by the DOE that encourages students to choose careers in science and technology.

NHU is thankful for the DOE's support and is looking forward to building on this partnership in the future.

Successful Recruitment Campaign, Largest Enrollment Class in NHU History

As a result of the ambitious and challenging enrollment drive that was announced in April, NHU welcomed its largest enrollment class of 145 new undergraduate students.  In addition, 21 new students enrolled in our Teacher Credential Program and 25 new students in our Translation and Interpretation program.

This unprecedented effort included recruiting visits to local high schools, personal letters to 6,000 local high school seniors, public service announcements on radio, television interviews, preview day/openhouse events, and visits by prospective students to the NHU Campus.

Many of these Fall enrollees are the first in their families to attend college.  Students come from the surrounding communities and as far as Salinas, Oakland and Central Valley.

College Board & NHU

On May 27, 2005 a high level delegation of representatives from the College Board, led by Dr. James Montoya, Vice President for Higher Education visited the NHU campus to explore the possibility of establishing a strategic partnership between the two organizations.

Under consideration are the following:

  • Designation of NHU as a testing center for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and other examinations administered by College Board.
  • Professional development training support including training for LCPA teachers to develop Advance Placement courses.
  • Continued access to lists of students in the Bay Area who have taken Pre-SAT AND SAT tests to be used by NHU for recruitment and outreach activities.
The College Board and NHU share the common goals of promoting higher education opportunities for our youth, creating a “college “going culture” and assisting students in the transition to higher education.
