LCPA is Accredited by WASC

Established in September 2001, the Latino College Preparatory Academy (LCPA) has become a quality educational option for English Language Learning students in San Jose.  LCPA and the NHU create an 8-year pipeline from 9th grade to a Baccalaureate degree serving 400 students.

Last March, LCPA’s application for accreditation was submitted and an on-site visit by the WASC team took place in May.  LCPA’s intention was to receive candidacy. At the summer meeting of WASC, the findings were that LCPA surpassed the criteria for candidacy. Accordingly, LCPA received a maximum three-year accreditation.

Accreditation will now permit LCPA to submit all courses that meet A-G requirements for approval by the University of California.  LCPA seniors now have the opportunity to apply for grants from the California Student Aid Commission to help cover their college tuition; most LCPA graduates attend the National Hispanic University.

Hewlett Packard Company’s Latest Donation

NHU has once again been the recipient of a generous contribution from the Hewlett Packard Company.  In this instance it is three beautiful large tropical plants that grace our entry way.  Since last year Hewlett Packard has donated beautiful artwork, furniture, white boards, refrigerators, and numerous other items that add to the quality of live in our new facility. Donated items can also be found in our library, classrooms, offices, throughout our new facility and in the Latino College Preparatory Academy.

The ongoing synergistic relationship between Hewlett Packard and NHU will undoubtedly lead to greater things in the future. We hope to continue to benefit from their generosity and HP in turn hopes to benefit from the well trained, highly motivated graduates that will emerge from NHU.

Successful Presentation by Dr. Cipriano Santos

On May 17, 2005 NHU presented “Making Blessings from Barriers: A conversation with Hewlett Packard (HP) Senior Scientist, Dr. Cipriano Santos.”   Dr. Santos addressed the audience of over 100 students, professors, and staff about his youth, and how he saw every challenge as an opportunity to develop and grow personally and professionally.  He elaborated about his work at HP and how students should prepare for the workplace of tomorrow.

Dr. Santos, one of the nation’s top scientists and recipient of the Hispanic Engineers National Achievement Award, has been with HP since 1990.  His work on mathematical optimization helps Hewlett Packard in its operational research and marketing decisions.

In his inspirational talk, Dr. Santos demonstrated to the students where education could lead them and what they can become if they approach their future with passion. He said: “Obstacles are just a state of the mind that, with a positive attitude, is dissolved by the power of their own determination”.
