20th Commencement Exercise |
||||
|
||||
“At NHU education is a pipeline,” explained NHU President Dr. David P. Lopez. To demonstrate this, he lined up on stage, an array of Nuevo Mundo pre-schoolers, LCPA high school graduates, NHU graduates, and teachers… on up to John Sobrato Sr. who received an honorary doctorate degree for his role in the economic, educational, and social development of Silicon Valley. The 20th Annual Commencement marked a significant milestone in the history of NHU. This is the first graduation since the opening of Sobrato Hall our new state-of-of the art learning facility. At this year’s ceremony Juan Jaime received the President’s Award, Alejandra Valencia received the Premio-Consulado de Mexico Award, Aridene Perez received a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Assembly, Dr. George Guim received the Outstanding Faculty Award, and Prof. Stephen Odom received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. |
Ruben Barales, deputy special assistant to President Bush was the featured speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony. His road to the White House took him through the San Mateo Board of Supervisors as well as Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, where he served as president and CEO. Barrales urged the NHU graduates to mentor young Latinos and help them to follow in their footsteps and graduate from college. |

NHU Participated in USDA/HSI Fellows Program |

| Professor Cecilia Serrano and two of her students, Brett Dearing and Cesar Tapia spent their summer at the Center for Food Protection and Defense at the University of Minnesota. The Center is a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. This research program was an excellent way of involving students in research experiences and to establish relationships with leading graduate institutions. If properly developed, these relationships could someday facilitate NHU students participation in graduate science programs at those institutions. In addition to launching their research programs, the faculty members learned how to plan a new degree program in nanoscience and to begin designing learning modules in high school physics, chemistry and mathematics that make use of elements of nanoscience to teach basic principals in the three fields. Serrano’s research will also be of value as the science faculty strives to create an emphasis area in biology and a B.S. degree in health and nutrition. |
During the summer, Dr. David Johnson and Gloria Romero participated in the Hispanic Serving Institutions Fellows Program of the Department of Agriculture. They spent five weeks in Washington, D.C. and learned about grant, contract, partnership, internship, fellowship and employment programs of the USDA, the National Science Foundation, Department of Education, the National Institutes of Health, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Housing and Urban Development, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Department of Energy. They also developed a network
with their colleagues from other universities that may result in
future collaborations in a variety of areas. NHU
now hosts a website that permits fellows to remain in contact and share
information. The knowledge and the contacts acquired through
this program are invaluable new assets as NHU strives to increase its
level of support from grants and contracts and as it develops professional
opportunities for faculty, staff and students. |
